The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced that a graduate of Adventist University of the Philippines topped the December 2010 Nursing Board Exam. Weanne Myrrh Razon Estrada topped the list of passers in the December 2010 NLE with a rating of 88.4%.

PRC Releases December 2010 NLE Results

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) recently announced that 29,711 out of 84,287 passed the December 2010 Nursing Board Exam. The licensure examination for nurses was administered by the Professional Regulation Commission - Board of Nursing on December 19 and 20, 2010.

Ward Class and Pinoy R.N. will also publish the Top Performing Schools in the December 2010 Nurse Licensure Examination and the December 2010 Nursing Board Exam Topnotchers shortly.

PRC Advisory on the December 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results

The Professional Regulation Commission- Board of Nursing (PRC-BON) recently announced that reports claiming that the December 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results will be released on Friday, Ferbruary 4, 2010 are untrue.

The Professional Regulation Commission issued the advisory due to the concern that the false reports have caused anxiety to those who are anticipating the release of the December 2010 NLE Results. The December 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results will be released withing the month of February, the PRC-BON says.

The December 2010 NLE Results will be released here at Ward Class and Pinoy R.N. once it is made available by the PRC.

Filing of Applications for July 2011 Nurse Licensure Examination

Those who intend to take the July 2011 Nurse Licensure Examination are advised that the filing of applications is open until the following dates:

April 15, 2011 for Repeaters
May 13, 2011 for First-timers

According to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), applicants for the July 2011 Nurse Licensure Examination are required to submit the following documents:

Duly accomplished Nurses’ Application Form (NAF);
NSO issued Certificate of Live Birth;
NSO issued Certificate of Marriage (for married women);
Transcript of Record with scanned picture and remarks: “For Board Examinations Purposes”;
Record of OR-DR Cases (for 1st timers only);
Summary of Related Learning Experience – (for 1st timers only);
Four (4) pieces passport size (1 ½ x 1 ½) colored picture with complete name tag in white background;
Community Tax Certificate;
Examination Fee of P900.00;
One (1) window mailing envelope; and
Valid Identification Card.

Applications can be filed at PRC Manila, PRC Regional Offices and its satellite offices. Campus processing of applications will also be available in selected schools, with venues and schedules to be announced later.

Applicants are also advised that the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) has declared that there will be no extension of the deadline for the filing of applications for the July 2011 Nurse Licensure Examination and that only those with complete set of required documents will be accommodated.

10,000 Nurses to be Hired by DOH and DOLE

Good news, nurses!

The Department of Health recently launched the Registered Nurses for Health Enhancement and Local Service Program (RN HEALS) and is currently needing 10,000 registered nurses to be deployed to different communities in the country.

The recruitment process of qualified nurses for the RN HEALS program will be handled by the Department of Labor and Employment and its regional offices. Nurses who pass the initial selection process will be required to undergo training to orient them to the roles and functions required by the program.

If chosen to participate in the RN HEALS Program of the Department of Health, a nurse will be receiving a monthly allowance of P8000. He or she will also be entitled to Philhealth and Government Service Insurance System group insurance. Other allowances from the Local Government Unit where the nurse will be assigned is also expected.

Japanese Nursing Licensure Examination to be Translated To English

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) recently announced that the Japan Licensure Examination for nurses will be translated to English increasing the chances of Filipino nurses to pass the said foreign exam.

The Japanese nursing licensure examination, administered in Niponggo, is given every February. Last year, it was reported that a lone examinee passed the licensure examination.

On a side note, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration has been receiving applications for the 3rd batch of qualified nurses to be deployed to Japan. The deadline for the submission of requirements for the 3rd batch of applicants was Jan. 6, 2011.

Those who are interested in working in Japan as nurses are caregivers are advised to register online through the POEA e-registration system at www.poea.gov.ph.

CHED Probibits Opening of New Nursing Schools

The Commission on Higher Education issued CHED CMO No. 32 prohibiting the opening of new nursing schools and likewise banning educational institutions from offering new graduate and undergraduate programs in nursing.

The moratorium on the opening of new undergraduate and graduate nursing programs shall take effect on SY 2011-2012 and shall include all public and private higher education institutions including those granted with autonomous status. Educational institutions with existing nursing programs are not covered by the moratorium.

The Commission on Higher Education further states in CMO No. 32 that the moratorium on the opening of new nursing schools and nursing graduate and undergraduate programs is based on the excessive number of institutions offering the course and the gradual decline in the performance of nursing graduates in the Nurse Licensure Examination. This, according to CHED, indicates a worsening state of nursing programs in the Philippines.

Other programs covered by the moratorium includes: Business Administration, Teacher Education, and Hotel and Restaurant Management

Full Text of the Reproductive Health Bill (RH Bill) for Download

Thanks to Pinoy R.N, we got hold of a copy of the full text of the Reproductive Health Bill or the RH Bill as it is popularly known.

The Reproductive Health Bill (RH Bill) or the Reproductive Health Act seeks to promote reproductive health, maternal and child health, responsible parenthood, adolescent and youth health, and the utilization of internationally recognized birth control measures as a way of addressing overpopulation in the country.

But the Catholic Church and various pro-life groups have this to say about the RH Bill: It is pro-abortion and objectively evil. Many argue that the vague provisions on artificial methods of birth control, sex education, and gender included in the bill will eventually lead to serious social effects.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines has been aggressive in opposing the RH Bill. This past month, sermons discussed the secular stand on RH Bill. CBCP has advised President Aquino to block the bill and even hinted that civil disobedience may be a repercussion if the bill is enacted into law.

But the President remains clear on his stand on responsible parenthood. He wants to provide informed choices to parents as far as family planning is concerned. No directive has been given to the Department of Health to halt the issuance of contraceptives so the DOH provides contraceptives to those who ask for it.

One of the authors of the RH Bill, Congresssman Edcel Lagman, clarifies that the RH Bill is neither pro-abortion or antilife. According to him, it is a comprehensive bill based on the government's duty to respect, fulfill, and protect the people's right to health. It address the country's population problem by providing access and information on natural and modern methods of family planning. In an article he wrote for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the congressman lists the following as the coverage of the RH Bill:

Information and access to natural and modern family planning
Maternal, infant and child health and nutrition
Promotion of breast feeding
Prevention of abortion and management of post-abortion complications
Adolescent and youth health
Prevention and management of reproductive tract infections, HIV/AIDS and STDs
Elimination of violence against women
Counseling on sexuality and sexual and reproductive health
Treatment of breast and reproductive tract cancers
Male involvement and participation in RH
Prevention and treatment of infertility
RH education for the youth

Awesome Podcasts for Nurses and Student Nurses

Pinoy R.N. recently published an article recommending 5 podcasts for nurses and student nurses. I subscribed to the nursing podcasts and true enough, they are as entertaining as much as they are informative. I loved the topics I have listened to so far. If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch, an Android phone, Zune or any other MP3 device, I suggest you give nursing podcasts a try.

Nursing podcasts are innovative ways of learning more about nursing concepts and procedures outside the classroom setting. Geriatric Nursing, for instance, is a well-produced podcast that provides a series of lectures on geriatric nursing. Topics include assessment of delirium and medication safety, among others. There are currently 117 episodes available.

Another valuable podcast is The Nursing Show by Jamie Davies. This nursing podcast is a goldmine as it has over a hundred well-produced episodes offering tips and other information for nurses and student nurses.

Sen. Cayetano Wants to Investigate Exploitative Practices of Philippine Hospitals

In his latest blog post, Lyle of Pinoy R.N. reports that Senator Pia Cayetano filed a resolution seeking to investigate the exploitative practices of Philippine hospitals in hiring new nurses as trainees without remuneration.

The senator, who heads the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, also wants to find out if there is truth in the reports that nurse trainees are made to pay P5000 to P7000 before being accepted in a hospital's training program.

In 2008, then PNA President Lea Paquiz slammed government and private hospitals for exploiting nurses by not hiring regular nurses and instead filling vacancies with unpaid trainees and volunteers and collecting training fees from them.

In 2009, Laguna 4th District Representative Edgar San Luis filed a bill that seeks to prohibit Philippine hospitals from collecting fees from nurse volunteers or trainees. In his website, Rep. San Luis said that the practice of hiring nurses as volunteers and trainees without compensation and collecting fees from them is plain and simple exploitation.

I hope something favorable comes out of this resolution filed by Senator Pia Cayetano through the Senate Committee on Health and Demography because Filipino nurses have been exploited by hospital administrators for years.

I know hospital administrators will reason out they do allocate resources for the specialized training of new nurses that's why they have to collect training fees. I wonder what those resources are. It's not as if they have well-written specialized modules for the nurses to use throughout the training program or designed a well-constructed mentoring program for each of their trainees. I even doubt if their trainees are provided with free meals.

Finally, the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results will surely be released this week. This means that the long wait is over for the 90,000 nursing hopefuls who took the nursing board exam last July 3 and 4, 2010.

Furthermore, the Professional Regulation Commission- Board of Nursing (PRC-BON) has announced that the oath taking ceremony for new nurses from the National Capital Region is scheduled on September 20 and 21, 2002. No update has been given on the regional oath taking schedules but it should be announced shortly after the release of the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results.

While waiting for the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results, it might interest you that the latest visa bulletin shows that there's a six month leap on the cut-off date for Filipino nurses.

This recent development will delight those nurses whose priority dates fall within June 1, 2004- December 15, 2004. Let us all hope that this positive trend will continue until the end of the year.

July 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results to be Released this Month

The July 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results will be released on the last week of August as announced by the Professional Regulation Commission- Board of Nursing (PRC-BON) through Resolution No. 2010-17.

In the same resolution, the PRC-BON announced that the December 2010 Nurse Licensure Examination has been moved from December 12-13, 2010 to December 19-20, 2010.

The deadline for filing of application for the December 2010 Nurse Licensure Examination for repeater applicants has also been moved from September 8, 2010 to September 28, 2010.

The Professional Regulation Commission- Board of Nursing (PRC-BON) recently released the oathtaking schedule for July 2010 New Nurses for NCR. This means that the results for the nursing board exam held on July 3-4, 2010, will soon be released.

Taking into consideration the previous releases of the nurse licensure examination results, the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results is expected to be released within the next two months. It is therefore suggested that while waiting for the exam results, install Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Reader on your computer so that you can access the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam Results once released.

Tickets to the oathtaking ceremony will be made available at the offices of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) following the release of the July 2010 Nurse Licensure Examination results.

In a few days, thousands of candidates will take the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam. And if you are one of the nursing hopefuls, be reminded that although you think you haver studied enough, preparedness for the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam involves other activities other than reviewing your notes. You also need effective test-taking strategies to increase your chances of doing really well in the Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE).

I have previously published a blog post on Effective Test-taking Strategies for those who will be taking the nursing exam. The test-taking strategies also include tips on Educated Guessing which will help you when answering difficult, unfamiliar, and generally out-of-this-world questions.

Also, do not forget to consume well-balanced meals and refrain from having spicy and oily food. You don't want to have gastric distress during the nursing board exam. Furthermore, you need to have adequate rest and sleep. If you feel you haven't covered everything yet, you can continue reviewing your notes until two days before the exam but get at least 8 hours of sleep everyday.

Lastly, you've got to believe that you have studied well for the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam. Good things do happen to people who strive hard to achieve their goals and those who face life's challenges with a positive attitude.

In approximately 18 days, thousands of candidates will take the July 2010 Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE).

By now, candidates to the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam are intensifying their review in preparation for the 2-day, 5-part examination that will take place on July 3 & 4, 2010.

But how does one go over all the topics covered during four years of nursing school in just a couple of months? The task may seem daunting but yes, it is doable. If you will be taking the nursing board examination this July, here's how:

Remember the Scope of the Nurse Licensure Examination. We have published a document here entitled the Scope of the Nurse Licensure Examination which is a guide to what will be covered during the July 2010 Nurse Licensure Examination. It bears a description of the different parts of the Nurse Licensure Examination, giving you an idea on the types of questions to expect during the nursing board exam. The Scope of Nurse Licensure Examination also includes a specific list of topics included in each of the 5 subtests.

Learn to prioritize. Three weeks is not much time. You cannot randomly choose the topics you review on a particular day. To be able to maximize your time, create a schedule so that you get to cover/review on everything that needs to be covered. having a schedule is also a great way to track your progress. Furthermore, you need to prioritize by focusing more on the topics you haven't fully mastered yet and just go over the ones you already know by heart.

Nutrition, Hydration, and Relaxation. No matter how engrossed you are in your review, never ever forsake your body. Nourish yourself with food that improves cognitive functioning, hence, the very logical food choices are the ones packed with vitamins and antioxidants (e.g. fruits, vegetables, whole wheat crackers, tuna). Next, consume at least 8 tall glasses of water daily to ensure adequate hydration. Finally, have ample rest and sleep between study periods for proper brain functioning.

Reviewing for the July 2010 Nursing Board Exam may be very challenging but in order to succeed, you must believe that you will pass the nursing boards because you are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills. So just stay focused on your goals and utilize the nursing board exam review tips listed above and soon, you will find your name included in the newest batch of Philippine nurses.

CGFNS Update: English Exam Waived for Certain VisaScreen® Renewal Applicants

In this month's newsletter, the CGFNS advises that VisaScreen® renewal applicants may be exempt from taking another approved English exam for renewal of their VisaScreen provided the following requirements are met:

The applicant can demonstrate employment in the Unites States in the health care profession that is designated on their International Commission on Healthcare Professions VisaScreen Certificate.
The period of employment must be for at least 27-36 months-- including nine months of the year before the date an applicant submits the VisaScreen® renewal application.
The applicant's employer submits an employment summary, with the said document on corporate letterhead with the appropriate signature.

This policy change took effect on March 1, 2010.

Those who intend to take the July 3 & 4, 2010 Nurse Licensure Examination are advised that the filing of applications is open until April 14, 2010 for Repeaters and May 14, 2010 for First Timers. According to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), applicants are required to submit the following documents:

Duly accomplished Nurses’ Application Form (NAF);
NSO issued Certificate of Live Birth;
NSO issued Certificate of Marriage (for married women);
Transcript of Record with scanned picture and remarks: “For Board Examinations Purposes”;
Record of OR-DR Cases (for 1st timers only);
Summary of Related Learning Experience – (for 1st timers only);
Four (4) pieces passport size (1 ½ x 1 ½) colored picture with complete name tag in white background;
Community Tax Certificate;
Examination Fee of P900.00;
One (1) window mailing envelope; and
Valid Identification Card.

Applicants are also advised that the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) has declared that there will be no extension of the deadline and that only those with complete set of required documents will be accommodated.

NCSBN to Implement New NCLEX-RN Test Plan and Passing Standard This Year

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN) announced that effective April 1, 2010, the NCLEX-RN examination will follow a new test plan. Furthermore, in conjuction with this new development, the said licensure examination will have a raised passing standard.

The decision of the NCSBN Board of Directors to raise the passing standard of the NCLEX-RN examination from the current standard of -0.21 logits to -0.16 logits came after the findings of a nine-person panel of experts assembled to perform a standard-setting procedure. Results of surveys conducted to nursing professionals also supported the need to raise the passing standard of the NLCEX-RN examination in response to the dynamic changes in health care delivery and nursing practice in the United States.

The NCSBN evaluates the passing standard and the NCLEX-RN examination test plan following a three-year cycle to ensure that entry-level nurses who pass the NCLEX-RN examination possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to render safe and effective client care. The current NCLEX-RN examination passing standard and test plan was implemented in 2007.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN) is a non-profit organization. Its members include the boards of nursing in the 50 states and other U.S. territories.

Just a while ago, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the November 2009 Nursing Board Exam Results. Out of the 94,462 examinees who took the nursing boards, only 37,527 successfully hurdled the said nurse licensure examination.

The examinee who got the highest ratings in the November 2009 Nursing Board Examination is Clarie Morales Bontol of Iligan Medical Center College, Inc. (87.80%) followed by Bryan Noel Cueto Asis of Lyceum of Batangas (87.60%) and Dickson Araza Laude of St. Scholastica College of Health Sciences- Tacloban (87%).

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the December 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination Results for those who took the exam in Hong Kong last December 2009.

The Board of Nursing administered the Nurse Licensure Examination in Hong Kong last December 12-13, 2009 to 90 examinees.

According to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), only 2 of the 90 examinees who took the exam in Hong Kong successfully hurdled the licensure examination for nurses.

How to Cope with the Stress-Inducing Wait for the November 2009 Board Exam Results

It's a couple of hours past midnight and still, you can't sleep. You keep thinking of the November 2009 Nursing Board Exam Results while trying to evaluate how you answered the questions in the exam. You are not sure if you answered most of the questions correctly and predict failure when the results come out. No matter how you reason with yourself that you reviewed well for the exams, a part of you is convinced that you didn't do so well.

Let's face it. The long wait for the November 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination Results is stressing you out. You are going through alterations in sleep and eating patterns and don't enjoy doing your usual activities. You seem to be in a bad mood lately and can't seem to focus on tasks at hand.

Stress, when left unmanaged, affects an individual's overall functioning negatively. It often leads to unhealthy habits that saps your willingness to enjoy the things you normally enjoy doing. It causes you to neglect yourself and the people around you. And yet, the stress brought about by the long wait for the board exam results is relatively easy to manage. All it takes is your willingness to help yourself and trying out these simple ways to defuse stress:

Start your day right. Start your day right by being positive . As soon as you wake up, think of happy thoughts. Be thankful that you are healthy and are surrounded by supportive people. Think of past events that bring you a sense of peace. Do something calming like having breakfast outdoors if the weather permits it. Taking a short walk before breakfast will also help defuse stress.

Breathe deeply. A couple of times a day, take deep cleansing breaths. A couple of minutes devoted to deep breathing will help calm your nerves and reduce anxiety. Do simple stretches as you deep-breathe to improve circulation and reduce tension in your body.

Relax to soothing music. Choose gentle background music that are relaxing without being melancholic. Arian Lydon's Fireflies is a good example of relaxing music. You can also listen to uplifting music like Depapepe's Spur.

Watch a movie or read a book. Since you slaved for months while reviewing for the nursing board exams, now is the time to watch a movie or read a good book. Be extra careful though when choosing a movie or a book. The overall theme should be uplifting. Stay away from material that are potentially depressing.

Surround yourself with green or blue. Colors like green and blue are the most relaxing colors in the color wheel. So whenever you feel the tension build up, go somewhere where the colors blue and green are in abundance. Going to places like the beach or a nature's park during stressful times will help you relax and defuse stress.

Talk to a confidante. One way of defusing stress is by talking to a confidante. When the long wait for the November 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination Results make you want to rip your hair out, talk to your most trusted friend or family member. Talking to somebody you trust will help you vent out your frustrations and ultimately help reduce stress levels.

Remember that stress is your body's response to external stimuli so you may employ a combination of strategies to deal with it effectively. So the next time you feel the tension build up, approach stress with an open mind. Utilize the strategies listed above or use some of your own so that you can deal effectively with the stress of waiting for the November 2009 Nursing Board Exam Results.

More than 95,000 candidates will take the November 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination

More than 95,000 nursing graduates will troop to testing centers nationwide starting today, November 29, to take the November 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination. The second day of this bi-annual nurse licensure examination is scheduled tomorrow, November 30.

The number of examinees who will be taking the November 2009 Nursing Board Exam is considered the biggest in the history of the nurse licensure exam in the Philippines. There were 77, 901 nursing graduates who took the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination early this year and 88, 649 candidates in the December 2008 Nurse Licensure Examination.

Successful Examinees in the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam as well as the previous ones who have not taken their Oath of Professional are advised that the Manila oathtaking ceremony will be held on August 18 and 19 (Tuesday and Wednesday), with morning (8:00 a.m.) and afternoon (1:00 p.m.) sessions at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.

Starting July 29, 2009, Oathtaking tickets are available at the Philippine Nurses’ Association (PNA) at 1663 F.T. Benitez Street, Malate, Manila. There will be no selling of admission tickets within the SMX Compound so those who will be attending the oathtaking ceremony are advised to purchase the admission tickets at the PNA Office. The deadline for buying tickets are as follows:

Aug. 18 AM Session- PNA will sell tickets until 5:00 p.m., Aug. 17

Aug. 18 PM Session- PNA will sell tickets until 12:00 noon, Aug. 18

Aug. 19 AM Session- PNA will sell tickets until 5:00 p.m., Aug. 18

Aug. 19 PM Session- PNA will sell tickets until 12:00 noon, Aug. 19

The PRC-BON would also like to inform all attendees that only those with valid admission tickets will be allowed to enter the venue. Receipts will not be entertained.

Below is the list of Top Performing Nursing Schools in the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam.

For the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination, St. Paul University- Dumaguete tops Category A (with 100 or more examinees) with a passing rate of 100%.

The top spot for Category B (with 30-99 examinees), on the other hand, goes to University of the Philippines-Manila. It is also interesting to note that aside from having a passing rate of 100%, University of the Philippines-Manila produced three examinees who got the 7th, 8th,and 10th highest ratings in the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam.

The nursing licensure exam results has been released yesterday and part of the results is the list of topnotchers in the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam.

At the top of the list is Golda Manto Yap (86.80%) , a graduate of Felipe R. Verallo Memorial Foundation in Cebu City. Ms. Yap is closely followed by Ronie Rose Capati Arevalo of Adamson University (86.40%) and Michelle Alejandro Barberan of Arellano University- Manila (86.20%).

The Professional Regulation Commission- Board of Nursing (PRC-BON ) just released the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam Results and 33,617 out of the 77,901 nursing hopefuls passed the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination.

The June 2009 Nursing Board Exam topnotcher, Golda Manto Yap, is a graduate of Felipe R. Verallo Memorial Foundation. Ms. Yap, with a rating of 86.80 percent, bested other examinees in the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam.

Policies and Standards for the BSN Program Under CHED Memorandum Order No. 14 (CMO No. 14)

Effective SY 2009-2010, Philippine nursing schools and colleges shall follow the new policies and standards for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program under CHED Memorandum Order No. 14 as promulgated by the Commission on Higher Education.

Ward Class obtained a copy of the 129-page document which was published at the website of the Professional Regulation Commission- Board of Nursing and the following interesting points were noted:

CHED will implement a gradual phase out of BSN Programs of non-performing nursing schools.
Nursing students shall choose at least two electives to complete the BSN Program.

Elective nursing subjects are to be taken by nursing students on the first and second semester of their 4th year. For Elective 1, nursing students can choose from Parent- Child Nursing, Spiritual Care Nursing, and Hospice Palliative Care. For Elective II, they can take Acute/Critical Care Nursing, Quality Health Care and Nursing, and Care of the Chronically Ill and the Older Person.

Last-Minute Reminders for the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam

Only two days!

I assume that those who will be taking the Nursing Board Exam on June 6 & 7 already checked out their respective examination sites. Visiting the examination site will be a good preparation for the examinees as they will be able to determine the route they will take during the day of the exam. Think of it as a rehearsal run to ensure punctuality during the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam.

Also, prepare your June 2009 Nursing Board Exam essentials in advance. Below is the list of the things you need to bring during the nursing board exam:

2 or more pencils (sharpened)
black ball pen
Notice of Admission
PRC receipt
1 meter-postage stamped window mailing envelope
1 long brown envelope
1 transparent plastic long envelope
1 non-programmable calculator
sharpener (optional)
meals and snacks (optional)
bottled water with labels removed (optional)
emergency medicine kit (optional)

You are expected to wear a prescribed uniform during the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam. This has been brought to your attention by your nursing school or by the PRC. Ensure that what you will be wearing during the nursing board exam fits comfortably.

Also remember to consume well-balanced meals (stay away from spicy and oily food) to avoid intestinal or gastric distress during the day of the exam. It will also be best that you prepare an emergency medicine kit containing anti-diarrheals and no-drowse medications for colds and allergies as previously suggested.

Furthermore, you need to have ADEQUATE rest and sleep at least two days before the nursing board exam. So if you haven't wrapped up your review yet, you have to do it now because after the long, rigorous hours of studying, you body needs to recharge for the big day ahead.

Lastly, THINK POSITIVELY and surround yourself with positive people. You know you prepared well for the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam and so in a matter of days, success will be yours!

June 2009 Nursing Board Exam Review Notes: Alzheimer's Disease

Wait, before you wrap up your review for the June 2009 Nursing Board Exam, here are some quick facts you need to know about Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's Disease is a common topic in the nursing board exam so there is a big possibility that questions will be asked regarding the disease. Here goes:

Alzheimer's Disease is often referred to as Senile Dementia.
Alzheimer's Disease is a degenerative disease (involves loss of neurons and synapses in the cerebral cortex and certain subcortical regions) which accounts for 60-75% of all dementias and is a brain disorder which affects a person's ability to go about his daily activities.
The earliest recognizable symptom of Alzheimer's Disease is memory loss and diagnosis is usually made after behavioral assessments, cognitive tests, and brain scans such as CT scan and MRI. A definitive diagnosis, however, can only be made after autopsy.
Alzheimer's Disease usually begins after age 60 and the risk goes up as the individual grows older. The risk of having Alzheimer's Disease also increases with a familial history of the disease.
There are four identified stages of Alzheimer's Disease and no matter what the stage, the main focus of the caregiver is providing a safe environment for the elderly patient. Caregivers should remember that early in the disease process, the client with Alzheimer's Disease may be at risk for suicide as they may become depressed or anxious. Providing a safe environment also means checking on the client regularly, lowering the bed, using appropriate lighting, and avoiding the use of restraints.
Another thing to consider about individuals with Alzheimer's Disease is that they experience Sundowning or "late-day dementia", a state of confusion that occurs at the end of the day. Sundowning is aggravated by fatigue, low-lighting, and shadows. Using appropriate lighting and reorienting the client to his environment will help reduce agitation and disorientation.
Since patients with Alzheimer's Disease will be disoriented to time and place as the disease progresses, it is also important to establish a structured environment and simple routines. The caregiver should give the client simple directions to minimize agitation Never pressure client as this can lead to further agitation and combative behavior. It also important to help reorient the client with the use of calendars and clocks.
Since memory loss is the earliest recognizable symptom of Alzheimer's Disease, the caregiver should help stimulate memory by engaging the client in conversation and bringing in familiar items like photographs and items from home.
While a client of Alzheimer's Disease is at risk for wandering and a confined area for wandering is needed, the client should not be isolated and a stimulating environment should be provided.
Clients with late-stage Alzheimer's Disease require assistance with all activities of daily living. The caregiver at this point should focus on providing adequate hydration and nutrition as well as assisting with elimination.
The most common medications for Alzheimer's Disease are tacrine (Cognex), donezepil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), or galantamine (Reminyl). Ony donezepil (Aricept) is approved for the treatment of advanced-stage Alzheimer's Disease. When giving these drugs, watch out for bradycardia and side effects like anorexia, weight loss, muscle cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

Aside from the usual kind words, let us take some time off from our busy schedules and pray for them so that they will be guided during the board exam. The June 2009 Nursing Board Exam, just like any major examination, is a major undertaking for our beloved nursing graduates and they will need encouragement from us. Let us give them that.

June 2009 Nursing Board Exam Tips: Effective Time Management Skills for the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination

As the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination draws near, candidates need to effectively manage their time in order to cover nursing topics as comprehensively as possible. While you are not expected to study for the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination 24 hours a day, you are expected to organize your activities around a goal--passing the NLE with flying colors. Below are tips on how you can maximize your time as you prepare for the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination.

Being in Control

Being in control of your schedule is the key to effective time management skills. You need to KNOW three important things: WHAT, WHEN, and HOW. Being in control of your schedule needs you to be realistic. You have to know WHAT you need to do, WHEN you need to do it, and HOW you’re going to fit the things you need to do into your schedule. For example, you want to master the commonly prescribed psychotropic medications, you need to KNOW the following:

· WHAT to do-- prepare visual aids, flash cards

· WHEN you need to do it-- on 5/13

· HOW to fit activity into schedule-- work after dinner on 5/13

Being in control means you have a clear idea of what needs to be done, when you need to have it done, and how you are going to accommodate the activity into your schedule.

Being Realistic with your Study Goals and Deadlines

In studying for the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination, we have a major deadline. And that is at least 2-3 days before the exam date. You are not expected to study until the night before the exam because you owe yourself the much-needed rest and sleep.

To be able to maximize your study time, you have to have specific study goals and plan to meet deadlines. Having a study goal of mastering Psychiatric Nursing in a day is unrealistic. Everybody knows that it is one of the most challenging aspect of the Nurse Licensure Examination. So what you need to do is break down Psychiatric Nursing into smaller topics and give yourself ample time to master a specific topic. For example, for Day 1 of Psychiatric Nursing week, you may have the following study goals:

· Defense mechanisms, structure of personality, ego functions, MSE-- 8:00 am to 10:00 am

· Theories of Development-- 10:00 am to 12:00 noon

· Nursing Process, Therapeutic Communication-- 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

When keeping deadlines, you need to have a tool so you can keep track of your goals and activities for the day. A daily planner which you can carry with you around is an ideal tool to remind you of the things that you need to do and when you need to get a specific activity done.

Studying with a Timetable

When you want to study effectively for the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination, you have to study with a timetable. Why? Well, effective study techniques necessitate following a well-organized timetable. Having your own study timetable will help you determine how many hours you need to study each day, help you keep track of your progress, and help you identify the time of day you are most alert and are able to cover the most difficult of nursing topics.

When studying for the Nurse Licensure Examination this June, making a weekly and daily plan will help. If you are committed to studying Psychiatric Nursing for a week, then make a weekly planner and then plan in advance the topics you need to study everyday and mark the corresponding number of hours you need to devote to a particular topic. Your timetable will also help you determine how many hours you spent studying on a particular concept and help you determine if you need to put in an additional hour of study for a particular nursing topic.

Creating that Study Space

Effective time management not only means you are doing the right task at the right time. It also means you are doing it at the right place. So when you want to maximize your study time as you prepare for the Nurse Licensure Examination this June 2009, make sure your study area is conducive for studying, well-lighted, and well-ventilated. You must also have all the materials you need for studying within reach so that precious time won’t be wasted looking for notes or references.

Sticking to a Schedule but Have Time for Important Things

Even if you wanted to earn very high marks in the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination, you need to live a balanced life. You are not expected to study 24 hours a day and logging in 8 hours a day of serious studying plus a couple of hours of active thinking each day (e.g. remembering your nursing mnemonics while taking a bath or exercising) is more than enough.

After long hours of study, make sure you get enough rest and sleep. You are also expected to nourish and hydrate yourself and engage in recreational activities. If you want to maximize your time as you prepare for the June 2009 Nurse Licensure Examination, you need to live a balanced life to help you stay focused to your goals.

Things To Remember During Operating Room Rotations

If I remember correctly, my operating room rotations were the most nerve-wracking. During my first day of exposure in the operating theatre, I was so fidgety that I managed to break a glass syringe. I also ripped a pair of surgical gloves to the chagrin of my clinical instructor.

Although we were made to perform return demonstrations on gowning, gloving, scrubbing as well as do advanced reading on common surgical instruments before O.R. rotations, what preparation I had prior to the exposure didn't lessen my anxiety. I was a total klutz that day and was more than happy to assist with just one procedure. In fact, considering how I felt during that time, I would've opted to just clean the soiled surgical instruments without thought of accomplishing my O.R. completion forms.

Since we all know that nursing students have to compete for very limited slots in the operating theatre, it is best to make the most out of each and every rotation in the O.R. And since it has been quite sometime since my last entry in Ward Class' Nursing School 101 category, here are a few things to remember during operating room rotations:

Observe punctuality. Always report early for your clinicals. Arriving in the nick of time will only heighten your anxiety.
As much as possible, familiarize yourself with the O.R. setup and the procedure you are about to assist. Ample preparation will boost your confidence.
Conduct yourself in a respectful, professional manner. Be courteous to the O.R. staff, even to the orderlies.
If unsure of a particular task, ask for guidance. Even if you have prepared for your O.R. rotation, you might forget how to go about the most simple things like scrubbing or gloving. If this happens, do not hesitate to ask for supervision. Ask help from your clinical instructor or from the O.R. nurse.
Do not make unnecessary comments in the presence of a patient, even those under general anaesthetic. Basic courtesy dictates that you respect the patient, anaesthetised or not. If possible, even if the O.R. staff engage in it, keep the unrelated social banter to a minimum.
Avoid bringing cellular phones inside the O.R. theatre. Also, if you know what's good for you and the patient, you won't even consider bringing a camera inside the operating room.
Report for your O.R. rotation on a full stomach and an empty bladder as the procedure you are about to assist may take a couple of hours.
Take extra effort to hydrate yourself before the start of your O.R. rotation to reduce the risk of fainting while assisting during a surgical procedure.
Periodically contract your leg muscles to reduce venous pooling. This is effective in preventing hypotensive episodes due to long periods of standing.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)

a strain of Staphylococcus Aureus, a gram-positive coccus
a very dangerous and easily transmitted nosocomial pathogen-->transmitted from healthcare worker to healthcare worker, healthcare worker to patient, and patient to patient
accounts for 40% of nosocomial staphyloccus aureus infections (note: resistant strains develop esp. in hospitals due to the large amounts of antibiotics given to patients)
spread by contact, usually by the hands of healthcare workers (25% of healthcare workers are suspected to be carriers of MRSA)
colonizes in the anterior nares, axilla, perineum, and inguinal area
community-acquired MRSA--> not as aggressive as hospital-acquired MRSA; susceptible to many antibiotics

Endocrine Disorders: Pheochromocytoma

a rare catecholamine-secreting tumor usually found in the adrenal medulla that secretes excessive amounts of epinephrine and norepinephrine
typically benign, less than 10% of cases are malignant
occurs in men and women, usually during the middle age but rarely after age 60
cause is unknown but some cases appear to be hereditary
complications include cerebral hemorrhage, cardiac failure, and even death

Assessment Findings

hypertension (may be persistent, fluctuating, intermittent, or paroxysmal)--> principal manifestation
pounding headaches
hyperglycemia and glucosuria
tachycardia, apprehension, palpitations
profuse sweating, cold extremities
nausea, vomiting
dilated pupils
diagnostic tests:

increased levels of plasma catecholamines
increased levels of urinary catecholamines and urinary vanillylmandelic acid (VMA)--> normal levels of urinary catecholamines is up to 14 mg per 100 ml urine while normal urinary VMA levels is less than 7 mg in 24 hours.
presence of tumor on CT and MRI

Medical Management

medications are given to patients with pheochromocytoma to control hypertension

Surgical Management

the primary treatment of a pheochromocyoma is adrenalectomy or the removal of one or both adrenal glands (depending on tumor location)

Nursing Management

monitor vital signs, especially blood pressure changes-->severe hypertension can precipitate a cerebrovascular accident and/or sudden blindness
administer antihypertensive medications as ordered
promote rest and decrease stressful stimuli--> acute attacks may be precipitated by emotional stress, physical exertion, and change in position
monitor urine tests for glucose and acetone--> clients with pheochromocytoma may present with manifestations of diabetes mellitus
for clients on 24-hour VMA testing--> instruct to avoid vigorous and prolonged exercise and intake of coffee, tea, chocolate, bananas, and vanilla-flavored food at least two days prior to and during urine collection (note: clincians may also order client to stop taking medications like methyldopa, L-Dopa, paracetamol at least three days prior to urine collection as well)
provide high-calorie, well-balanced diet
instruct patient to avoid smokinga nd stimulants like coffee and tea--> may influence catecholamine release
for clients with an adrenalectomy, observe for BP changes-- clients are at risk for shock due to a drastic drop in catecholamine levels
provide client teaching on possibility of lifeslong steroid replacement (for bilateral adrenalectomy)

Prognosis

If pheochromocytoma is discovered early, it can be usually removed surgically. Without early interevention, patients with pheochromocytoma are at risk for cerebral hemorrhage and cardiac failure.

Prevention

There are no known ways to prevent pheochromocytoma. But with early diagnosis and intervention, complications may be prevented.
